CHEER PHI CHRONICLES

"WSSU's Original Cheer Phi"

Wannette Stevens-Fripp September 2011

When I first heard about the  iconic Winston Salem State University Cheerleaders I was a senior in high school trying to decide which HBCU I was going to attend in North Carolina.  Everyone was going to NC A&T so I decided against it.  I heard about NCCU and even went to visit their school.  I saw their cheerleaders and spoke with the coach who was very nice but their cheerleaders didn’t seem to move me.  I attended WSSU sight unseen because of the reputation of their cheerleaders being the best in the CIAA!

"From Tallahassee's Highest Hilltop to the Atlanta Falcons"

Wannette Stevens-Fripp November 2011

Royce Reed of the hit VH1 reality show Basketball Wives cheered professionally for Orlando Magic and Miami Heat.  Chato Waters was an Atlanta Falcons cheerleader and is currently the cheerleading coordinator for the organization.  What do both of these ladies have in common?  They both got their start cheering on the sidelines at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida.

"Continuing the Tradition of “Woo-Woo” While Building a New Legacy"

Imagine entering the gymnasium among 300 plus other females all vying for a spot on the same team. This would definitely be conceivable for the Carolina Panthers or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, but this was for a college cheerleading squad an HBCU at that….this was the “Woo-Woo” experience of Virginia State University.
