In 2010, a federal judge ruled that cheerleading does not “count” as a sport under Title IX. The majority of college cheerleaders, then, are in their schools’ athletic departments but outside the NCAA, college athletics’ governing body. All sports that count toward Title IX are governed by the NCAA, and the NCAA must comply with Title IX. Do you think this is rooted in sexism since cheerleading is predominately a female sport? Oxford Dictionary defines sport as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a team competes against another or others for entertainment". Now let's define competing. To compete is to strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others who are trying to do the same: This is where cheerleading as a whole continues to lose this battle as it relates to Title IX and the NCAA. Regardless of the amount of skill, athleticism, creativity, time and talent it takes unless at every game there is a cheer battle cheerleading will be battling this status as a whole, forever. Honestly, it seems like Stomp-N-Shake cheer is the answer! Whether it is traditional, game day, all-star, competitive, stomp-n-shake, recreation or professional, incorporating a cheer battle is enough to satisfy this condition. What are your thoughts?
